How to Start a Movement
I think of the NYC Fair Trade Coalition as a movement. A movement is messy, loosely structured, makes mistakes, can change direction easily, and aims to constantly push the agenda forward. When I started as the chair of the NYC FTC I spent the first year listening, learning, listing, and inviting others to join. I became a we with a few new members in early 2018 and now we have grown to over 55+ business members and 150 fair trade advocates.
I'm often asked how do I keep track of all the different projects, events, lists, and more. I enlist the help of others, rope people into tasks they don't yet feel qualified to do, I build them up and ask how I can support them. I also do the things I enjoy. I enjoy teaching, organizing interactive events, traveling, and building diverse coalitions of ethically minded individuals. I love walking into a room and seeing not only members but a room full of friends. Something I know our members truly appreciate as well. I fall in love with the things I don't come easily - long emails, financial documents, long term commitment.
As we gear up for spring programming I invite you to listen, learn, and join. Below are a few upcoming events I am personally hosting. These are events that will serve the movement, push you to grow as a human, and challenge you to think outside the box. Stay tuned for more info and PLEASE watch the video above. You won't be disappointed.
